White Fish

White Fish

Fresh & Tasty

A broad category, ‘White Fish’ refers to round fish that live near the sea bed (including Cod, Hake and Haddock) as well as those that live on it (flat fish, such as Plaice and Sole). An excellent source of lean protein, white fish is deservedly popular, thanks to its delicate flavour and firm, easily cooked flesh.

All Greendale seafood is sourced either from our own vessels or from trusted suppliers. We’re the proud owners of over 20 fishing vessels based in Devon and Cornwall - our boats land regularly at Brixham, Newlyn, Salcombe and Exmouth, ports which provide direct access to the Western channel, where clean, deep waters and strong currents create the perfect environment for world-class seafood. Sustainable fishing methods ensure that these stocks remain intact.
Most of the fish we sell on our counter is wild-caught by our own fishing fleet based in Devon and Cornwall, though we do stock some farmed fish (e.g. salmon, bream and prawns), sourced from trusted suppliers.

Our boats return most days with a new catch; fresh fish can often be on its way to Greendale within hours of leaving the sea. We mostly sell fresh fish, but sometimes - if our boats bring in a bumper haul - the best way to ensure maximum freshness is to freeze it. Just like our fresh fish and shellfish, all our frozen seafood is sourced either from our own vessels or from trusted suppliers.

Yes, we do! Our fishing boats keep us well stocked with fresh lobster and crab from the waters of the Devon and Cornwall coastline. We store them in purpose-built water tanks at Greendale Farm Shop - you can purchase live or cooked lobster and crab.

Our Fishmongers select the best for our fish counter each day. They’re responsible for preparing the daily catch for sale, from filleting and de-boning to cooking and portioning. We gut and clean all whole fish as a matter of course, and we can remove the head, tail and fins if you wish – just ask a member of staff and they will be happy to prepare your fish for you exactly as you want it.

Our policy is to invest locally, to continually modernise our fleet and to strive to get the best fish to our customers, while prioritising safety, compliance and sustainability. All of our boats are flagged to the UK, where maritime safety standards are among the highest in the world.
Sustainability is key to the health of our oceans. By harvesting seafood sustainably, we ensure we play our part in the future vitality of the seas and fishing communities of southwest England. The concept of sustainability is widely recognised as having three components; environmental, social and economic, and our company approach to sustainability incorporates all three. Quota management and regulatory compliance protects stocks, and we invest in developing and sharing industry best-practice. We also hold sustainability accreditations.

Regular visitors to our Farm Shop will know that our skilled Fishmongers are always very happy to ‘talk fish’! Whether it’s a question about where our fish is caught, what’s currently in season or how best to prepare and cook it, our team are on hand to answer all your questions. If you’re shopping on our website, you can browse the ‘Tips and Advice’ section to find answers to all your questions, and you’ll also find ‘How to Cook’ suggestions on each relevant product page, plus our large, easy-to-use recipe archive for inspiration and advice.
