Meet the latest fishing vessel to join the fleet. Ted of Ladram was built by the skilled team at Parkol Marine Engineering Ltd in Whitby.

30 under 30 miles 2024
Based in the heart of the East Devon countryside, Greendale Farm Shop is an award-winning family business with generations of farming experience. We take pride in selling meat from our own farmland and fish from our own boats, and we also believe it’s incredibly important – now more than ever – to support the superb local growers and producers on our doorstep here in the West Country. To this end, each week we’ll be featuring a different small business, all located within 30 miles of our Farm Shop, and all brilliant examples of the wonderful produce available locally. From artisan bakeries, dairies and micro-breweries to jam, preserve and fudge makers, soap producers and candle workshops, this small region has so many passionate and successful businesses. By filling our shop with their exceptional produce, we can offer Greendale customers a great choice, support our local economy and keep food miles to a minimum – it’s a ‘win-win’ as far as we’re concerned!

The Benefits of Shopping Locally
At Greendale, we believe there are more reasons than ever to shop locally; as well as offering a more personal shopping experience (with direct economic benefits for the local economy), smaller local shops like ours offer fresher, better-quality stock than the supermarket giants, with a more interesting choice of locally-grown produce. As we’ve seen recently, local shops have also proved useful in a crisis; for example, when temporary fuel shortages prevented shoppers from driving to supermarkets, smaller local shops stepped in to fill the gap.

Building for the future
At Greendale, we have been working to modernise our fleet, and in the past six years we have commissioned five new fishing vessels. The Nichola of Ladram, a Crabber, built in 2019; the Georgina of Ladram, a Beam Trawler, built in 2020; the Amanda of Ladram, an Offshore Netter, built in 2021, the Winter of Ladram, a craber built in 2022 and the Ted of Ladram, a Whelker, built in 2025.

Supporting the Farming Community
Greendale has chosen to support The Addington Fund, a farming charity in England and Wales that provides support to farmers and the rural community through various means, including disaster relief, housing, and grants. The Fund aims to help farmers stay in their chosen rural environments, and to support farming families and ensure the long-term sustainability of the countryside.

Farming for the Future
From the start, the Greendale beef herd has been integral to the success of Greendale Farm Shop; we’ve gained a reputation for superb quality beef, thanks to the expertise of our farm management team and the skilled butchers at the Farm Shop.

Why Choose a Career in Fishing?
The sea is a challenging and exciting working environment, worlds away from a ‘normal’ 9-5 desk job – tides, weather, seasons and the fish themselves ensure that no two days are ever the same.

Helping to Clean Up Our Seas
Greendale has been a proud supporter of the brilliant environmental project, Fishing for Litter (FFL), providing donations and carrying out fundraising activities. Our fishing vessels have carried Fishing For Litter bags, helping to remove rubbish from the ocean on a daily basis and bringing it back to land to be recycled or disposed of properly.

Supporting the Fishing Community
We are proud supporters of the Fishermen’s Mission, the only UK fishermen's charity to provide emergency support alongside practical, financial, spiritual and emotional care. With a fishing fleet of over 20 vessels and 120 seagoing fishermen, we know how important it is to look after the wellbeing of our crews and their families.

Our Fishing Fleet - Fishing Boat Names
The Greendale fishing fleet is more than just a collection of boats; it’s a symbol of our dedication to fishing and our local community. And, just as each boat serves a unique purpose, so each one of them also has a name that tells its own story.

Local Fish – Brixham & Newlyn
The picturesque ports of Brixham and Newlyn are more than just charming coastal towns—they're the twin beating hearts of the Devon and Cornwall fishing industry, providing jobs on-shore and off and boosting the regional economy. Both ports play a crucial role in supporting Greendale's commitment to providing fresh, sustainably sourced seafood.

Greendale Café
Take a well-earned break at our Farm Shop Café. The extensive menu is created around many of the items sold in our shop; we offer a range of delicious dishes that showcase fresh local produce from our fish counter, deli and butcher departments.

Nothing gets wasted
We hate waste! We try to ensure our fish reaches customers in as fresh a state as possible, either from our fish counter or online (fresh fish is delivered via an overnight service). The Greendale fishmongers are skilled at keeping waste to a minimum, and ensure that quality fish is never discarded unnecessarily. Learn how we do it.

Local Devon Honey
Greendale Farm is home to 30 beehives, their position just off ‘Honey Lane’ couldn’t be better located to take advantage of not only all the different pollinating crops on the farm but also the natural heather and heathland of Woodbury Common. Over 1.5 million bees are busy working every day at the apiary in order to produce some of the most natural and purest honey that you can buy. The Exeter Beekeepers’ Association (EBKA) established the Apiary on the farm at Greendale two years ago and they look after the bees on our behalf and allow us to be able to sell our home-produced honey in our Farm Shop and on our website. Labelled 'Greendale Honey', it's truly local (and truly lovely!).
